Got Lucky When I Almost Gave Up

Updated: May 26

"So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit. It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.” - John Greenleaf Whittier

That line hit me in the feels this week. Not because anything super dramatic happened, but because everything felt exhausting… until, randomly, it wasn’t.

Reality Wins Over Expectations

So last week at work, we had this carnival-themed R&R event. Think office cubicles transformed into game booths, coworkers in semi-costumes, and free food that vanished in 2 seconds.

It was fun. Chaotic. Distracting in the best way. Now, some context about me:

I suck at anything that involves winning. Whether it's raffles, promo contests, or just trying not to be the last one called during a group activity, I never win. Ever.

So when I tried the games, I wasn’t aiming for prizes. I just wanted to decompress with my teammates and vibe out.

Luck Showed Up in My Last Shot

One of the games was basically a wholesome beer pong. Think pingpong balls + plastic cups + 10 attempts = win something random.

By the 10th and last shot, I turned to my friend and literally told her there's no chance in hell I would get this. And of course, I didn't.

Joke - the ball actually landed in a cup, and I won a minor prize!

I know it's nothing huge, but I screamed anyway like I won the grand prize or something. For someone who rarely won, any win is a huge deal, and I was hell happy about it. LOL.

Record-Breaking Lucky Streak

Then there was the ring toss. Three shots for ₱1.00 and that's it.

By my third and final ring, I’d already checked out mentally. I just flung it without a second thought and surprise - that damn thing freaking landed. Like, perfectly. Jackpot prize.

So basically, just when I thought there was no chance of me winning, I won, and guess what I got?

Pringles. FOR. ONE. PESO.

No joke, I felt like the luckiest girl in BGC at that moment. 😂

Although the prizes were pretty insignificant, I was still amazed to see how things worked out just when I thought it was hopeless.

I mean, who would have thought I would win twice in a single afternoon? That's just insane. LOL.

Unexpected Break From the Rain

Here’s where it gets weirder.

A day before this, I published a whole moody blog post about how the rain in Manila never ends. You can read it here.

I was on the brink of losing it between going to the office with wet shoes and drenched clothes, surviving a round-trip commute from hell, getting points deducted for my performance because I often got late over it, getting my team penalized because of it as well, and with the possibility of not even making it to work - it was a lot.

And then… the next day?

Sunshine. Clear skies. Commute went semi-smoothly.

It’s like the universe saw I was almost at my breaking point and decided to give me a break instead.

The Universe Has a Funny Way of Showing Up

I get it. These aren't huge life-altering moments, but they reminded me that sometimes, just when we’re done, things shift.

Unexpectedly. Subtly. Like the tiniest spark of luck reminding us that hey princess, not all is lost. LOL.

Of course, I’m not about to claim I’ve mastered this whole “don’t quit” thing. Sometimes, not quitting feels damn near impossible. And honestly? That’s okay.

But if you’re on the edge right now - mentally, emotionally, or even just trying to make it through your Monday - maybe hang in there a little longer.

One more shot. One more ring toss. One more rainy day. You might end up with sunshine or snacks or an unexpected win. And sometimes, that's enough.

Anyhoo. It's 2:01 AM already, so I'll try to rest up now, even though I'm still wide awake from the venti caramel latte that I had a while ago.

Poor life choice, I know, and I have a freaking root canal appointment in 8 hours.

Caffeine + pain + dental drills? Iconic combo. IYKYK.

Pray for me. Wish me luck. Tabang. Kbye.
